Stories, ideas and musings to make sense of this thing called life..

Writing Space

The snow has not stopped falling, and there’s chunks of ice and snow outside- well, that happened fast! I was happily enjoying the fall, and suddenly it’s winter.

As well, since I’ve decided to cover myself well this winter (as I said in my last blog), I am not really allowed to complain about winter. But I can still talk about it, right?

Ok, so without complaints , lets move on.

I wrote yesterday’s and today’s post on my iPad, sitting on my writing desk. Yes, I decided to have a dedicated writing space on a table in the corner of our living room. This table has always been taking up space here, and it had a monitor on it from the days my son used it for online stuff during covid. But it was getting no use. So the monitor has been moved, and writing supplies brought in. I am waiting for a desk organizer, slated to arrive on Friday.

I am hoping to have paper, envelopes, journal, pens, pencils etc. stored in it for easy access. With a lamp (upcycled from another space in the house), and a heater close by (our dining room gets chilly in winter, and so it’s always been there), this is a nice space to think and write in.

To make it a true writing space, I am banning myself and others from bringing their phones to this table. My iPad is mostly my writing space, so it can come but only so I write (and maybe research) on it. No sitting and doom scrolling allowed.

I used this space on Sunday afternoon to write a from scratch artist bio for myself. I really got into the exercise, and found it hard to get up even though we were coming close to dinner time. I first wrote out a draft by hand, edited it, and then typed it out on my iPad to store it on a Google Sheet.

But just the fact that I came to my writing space with a specific agenda in mind, leaving distractions behind, and everyone else busy with their stuff, I was able to really get into my work, and finish it to my satisfaction. I actually enjoyed my time getting into the flow of it.

So I am excited to get this space all decked up this weekend to be a true writing space. My fountain pens are cleaned and filled with ink. I have a journal for a planner starting now- I don’t need to wait for the new year! I have good pens and pencils waiting to be used.

I decided to start using this space before I was ready with everything because I figured it doesn’t make sense for it to be aesthetically ready before using it. I mean, I had things to write already, and this is now a writing space whether aesthetic or not. So I get to use it. Too many times we wait for perfection, and miss out on opportunities because we can’t be ready until things are just so. And life is too short to be waiting for perfection.

Winter may be a great time to use this space well, as well. To get cozy with my words, and have a hot drink sitting on the side- what’s not to like!

More posts coming soon from my writing space 🙂
