Stories, ideas and musings to make sense of this thing called life..

The Long Weekend Summary

The long weekend is done. For my son it was a five day weekend with snow day on Thursday and PA day on Friday. But time passed so fast even though we had no plans, nowhere to go, and all the snow to look at from inside the house.

It snowed all weekend!
My backyard view

Yes, it was a LOT of snow…

I don’t remember seeing so much snow around my house since I’m living here for 15 years. Thursday morning was a big shocker with over a foot of snow lined up outside. And then the snow kept falling all of Saturday and Sunday. I think old man winter was trying to make up for almost no snow last year, all in a gap of 3-4 days! How fun for us who need to shovel, right? I know my husband had a great upper body workout shoveling all weekend!

The sourdough pita bread my son made are so yummy!

Besides the snow, a highlight of the weekend was baking and roasting.

I baked a sourdough loaf. My son tried his hand at sourdough pita bread. I baked a batch of baked oatmeal that will be good for 2-3 breakfasts before school. I also roasted a big batch of root vegetables that I found on the reduced rack of the grocery store. Now I get to eat these yummies for a few lunches to come (along with a lot of other goodies like fresh carrots and apples of course).

Drawing from my simple still life set up
Another still life drawing and set up

As promised I spent some time drawing each of the days.

I have to put this activity on my daily plan even though it’s not a chore to be done. Because if it’s not on my list, it could easily not happen. But if it’s on the list, I have it front and center on my mind, and I make the time. And whether it’s “work” or “good to have”, if I want to do it, it goes on the list.

Another delightful thing that I managed to fit during 2 of the 3 weekend days, is a little afternoon nap!

Oh it was lovely. I really enjoy napping in the bedroom with a lot of daytime natural light. I don’t feel the need to pull the blinds because I want to sleep. I think the natural light keeps my body aware that it’s the day time, so the nap can’t morph into deep sleep and mess up my night time sleep. And with all the snow around, the natural light is especially bright these days. Even my son, who is the most anti-napper around here fell asleep on Sunday afternoon after laying in bed day-dreaming. It speaks to the kind of weekend we had- long, holed in, and without plans- the best time to just relax 🙂

Interestingly not much TV happened.

I was surprised because we do love to catch something or the other on the weekends, especially in winter. But the need or the time just didn’t happen. Between me baking, and reading and napping, and my husband spending quality time with all the snow, we just didn’t get around to it. And that is fine too.

Overall, a great family weekend.

We all got alone time. We all relaxed. We all did things together. We have some good bread to eat- life is good!
