Grocery Frugality Win

My big frugality win this week is about something I had been hoping for, and this past week it happened! And I am amazed at how smoothly the shift came to be.

I am talking about…

Replacing store bought salad greens with my homegrown sprouts!

Yes, that’s the kind of nerd I am…

I did not have salad greens on hand all of last week and this week, but I have had enough sprouts that I did not need salad greens.

Between sprouts, tomatoes, cucumber, radish, and some kind of fruit, I had a great salad to serve with dinner.

And no plastic containers of leafy greens, or heads of lettuce were bought…yay!

I did buy a big box of sprouting seeds from a Canadian store Mumm’s, and they will last me a while! So I am set with seeds, and hence, salad sprouts (!) for a while to come, for a fraction of the cost of salad greens.

And that makes my heart so very happy…

Taking care of my seeds every morning and evening, and seeing their magic unfurl a little bit everyday keeps me grounded and happy.

Then eating them with their particular crunch and fresh interesting flavors is another joy to behold everyday.

I am not sure why this is not a thing. I guess sprouts cannot be sold in large quantities and shipped from long distances because of their very short shelf life. So companies or farms are not able to sell sprouts on a big scale even though it’s a great food product for us to be consuming. And not many people are aware of growing and eating sprouted seeds (I have had people look at me funny when I’ve tried to explain what I am trying to do here). Between the lack of knowledge and popularity, and lack of sprouts as a product in grocery stores, I guess eating them is not a common thing.

The broccoli sprouts that I can pick up in my grocery store are very pricey for a very small box. Since I now know how few seeds are needed (cents worth!) to make that box worth of sprouts, I am not willing to pay seven dollars for them…I would rather take the trouble to grow my own, and get them as fresh as possible.

So frugality wins in this case. And frugality that comes with the added benefit of calming and intentional rituals of growing one’s own food. And all that nutrition…

A total win win!
