As always the weekend flew by in a flash! Saturday was busy with all of us having our own plans, and Sunday was just about catching up with kitchen work and other stuff around the house.
I like the balance of one outside day and one home day on the weekends. I need that one day to make sure I am ready for the week ahead- there is food prepped for breakfast and lunches and snacks, there are clean clothes to wear, the week has been planned, the plants have been taken care of, all needed groceries are at hand, all empty jars and bottles have been refilled, etc. And all of this besides making sure meals for the day home are also taken care of.
I am not sure how other people do it…I say that because I don’t hear anyone else tell me that they need to stay home one day to take care of life stuff. They make plans all the time, and life seems to go fine for them. And that makes me think that maybe either I’m too slow and am not able to take care of things in a shorter time frame and need a whole day to get everything done; or I do way more than I need to do? And that maybe makes me inefficient?
I don’t know. But I don’t think I would like it any other way, even though I complain (only in my head!) about my long list of chores on my weekend day home. But I also get this weird satisfaction from checking things off my list one by one, and knowing I am ready for the week.
For example, I know that the only way I can get to my morning yoga class on weekdays is that I have already prepped breakfast options that I just need to head up when I get home. I don’t have time to make things from scratch except if I’m frying an egg and toasting a slice of bread. But having things like baked oatmeal, frittatas, homemade granola, or oatmeal cooked for more than one time help me with quick breakfasts. And I can amp them up with more nutrition and less sugar. Win-win! Except of course, I have to make sure I have them prepared over the weekends.
Since I do laundry only once a week, it is necessary for me to get it done if we want enough clean clothes for the next week, as we are not owners of big wardrobes. And things like socks and underwear do run out!
Slowly the tasks add up, and my day at home gets busy. But I like that I don’t have the pressure of being anyplace else that day. And just being on my feet all day, I rack up a lot of steps! My husband, who loves his walks around the neighbourhood, helps with filling in the gaps in our grocery shopping from whatever I miss when I do the big shopping during the week.
But we do intersperse our day at home with some TV watching (The Sopranos right now!) of whatever show is our favorite of the moment. With a cup of coffee or a snack in hand. Those restful moments feel like a good break and an indulgence. The guilty pleasures of the weekend…amidst the hard work of chores!
And it didn’t help my kitchen time yesterday that I had decided to make gnocchi from scratch for dinner. It turned out great, but yes, time consuming…but also fun. Thanks to using my hands slowly (such a joy!), and listening to a really good audiobook (The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter).
That was Sunday. Thankfully all the kitchen and house work was also preceded by a morning coffee and breakfast walk with my husband with us sitting outside on a gorgeous day enjoying a little eggy treat to start our day at home.
I guess I do like my weekend day at home…
