Frugal Wardrobe

It’s that time of the year for me when I make the transition from winter to summer clothes.

I dread having to find the time to do this, but once I do, put on a podcast or music, I actually really enjoy it.

And the possibilities of the new season, and suddenly a whole new wardrobe (it does feel new after all those months of not seeing my summer clothes) makes me excited.

Of course, there is more excitement in changing over from winter to summer clothes than from summer to winter clothes, but we go with it because Mother Nature gives us no choice in this matter, right?

But this changing over of clothes is also a time to purge one’s wardrobe. What did I not wear, or not even think of wearing all past season. There are nice fancy things that one may not have had the opportunity to wear, but they are needed when they are needed. And I like them enough that I keep them.

But then there are those clothes we see all the time in our stuff, but pass over them every single day because they do not excite us enough to put them on. Such clothes really need to go.

They need to go along with the ones that don’t fit, or have grown too old fashioned for us, or have deteriorated in some way.

It is great to get rid of things that do not work for us any more. They make space literally and figuratively.

It is good to make our wardrobes leaner. And essential. And in line with our current selves.

It is also a good time to make a list of things we may be in need of. This list helps with sticking to absolute needs when we do go out shopping. Because our brain does want to run away with all the cute things we spot.

But with my frugality mindset very much in place with regards to clothes, I find that my wardrobe is only getting smaller every year. I remove more clothes than I replace.

In fact, I hardly replace because I mostly have what I need. When I do buy I try to go with classics that would work for a long time, and I buy good quality things which will last.

And most seriously, I do not feel the need for too many clothes. I do not have the energy or the brain capacity to think of wearing different clothes every day. Only when we go out do I even think about it. Most days I wear my home day uniform, or gym clothes (that I’ve had from years, or stolen t-shirts from my boys 🙂 ), and 3-4 sets of night clothes.

I really think humans do not need as many clothes as we think we need. I know if I cut the number of clothes by one-third (strategically of course), I will not feel a pinch. I will still have more than I need. I will still function just fine. But, I also like having some nice clothes for when I do want to dress up once in a while.

So my frugality post today is about purging my wardrobe, replacing only the most needed stuff, and having the best quality and classic piece that will serve me a long time.

Because, I want to do bigger and better things with my limited time in this life than be the person with the most clothes stuffed in her closet.
