Frugal Friday is here again.
I am happy it’s Friday for sure. And talking about frugality provides a great reminder to keep that feeling front and center during the weekend when it’s much easier to spend mindlessly with the availability of time, and the feeling of freedom from the tyrrany of mundane everyday life, right?
So what have I done to be frugal this week.
Tomatoes!
My husband found all of these tomatoes for $1.50 at the grocery store- good organic tomatoes that I don’t see anything wrong with! Maybe they were just older, or not as big or nicely shaped as the others? Because to my eyes they look just fine. So I am happy to have them in my kitchen awaiting their destiny of being cooked soon.
I bought replaceable lids
My decade old glass containers were having their lids to crack up. The containers, being glass, are perfectly fine. And I love their sizes for storing leftovers. I use them ALL THE TIME! So it only made sense to replace the lids, and keep on using them, right? Now with these new lids, I hope to use these containers another decade…perhaps 🙂
Cheaper Eye Screws
I bought these eye screws from Canadian Tire for putting a wire on my art pieces with. This box of 12 cost $1.99. That seemed pretty reasonable to me. And then I popped into Home Depot across the street hoping they would have more size choices for me to get.
They did not.
In fact, they had this exact same pack from the same brand. But priced at $3.55! Seriously?! Guess where I bought them from?! So happy I didn’t go to Home Depot first and spend the extra dollar-fifty each of the 4 packs I ended up buying.
Coffee Grinds Save
We are using up coffee grinds in our French Press.
Ok, more explanation needed I think.
We buy ground coffee only for our camping trips.
Otherwise we have a grinder at home to freshly grind the beans for every cup of coffee- yes we are coffee snobs! But of course, we can’t finish a whole bag of ground coffee in a week of camping. So it was languishing around in our refrigerator since the summer. My husband suggested that we finish up the grounds before using up the beans.
So for the past few days, we’ve been using our sturdy little French Press to finish up the old coffee.
It’s not as great as a freshly ground and brewed americano at this stage, but atleast its getting all used up. And saving us the money we have already spent on it. And the longer it would sit, the worse it would get and then get dumped out. So I am happy we are using it up before its too late!
Homemade Hummus
Making things in the kitchen that we don’t have to buy is always a win for me. This week it’s my simple hummus. Making it at home means I can make it with as little fat as I want (no added oil!), and I can make it in small enough quantity that it gets used up before I see fungal growth on it- which usually happens by the time we get to towards the end of the store-bought container. And for me, just a little bit on my toast is a great food pleasure in my day. So here’s to homemade hummus- for pennies, with best ingredients, and a dollop of joy 🙂
I am also planning on making Kefir Bread today- the fermentation and rising happening due to kefir instead of sourdough starter…I am excited to see how that turns out 🙂
That is all I can think of for the week.
Here’s to more frugality for the coming days…
