Frugal Friday: Family Day Weekend Plan

Friday Frugality post kicks off the long weekend for me here in Ontario.

This weekend is going to be a big snow dump weekend. We already had a huge dump yesterday (probably my biggest one since I moved into my house 15 years ago?!). Which means my son is already on his extra long weekend, with a snow day yesterday for schools, and PA day today.

This being a snowy weekend, and the Family Day long weekend, we will be spending a lot of quality time together at home. Perfect time for Family Day right?

I have some frugal activities planned for this weekend.

  • We are soon visiting Paris. I want us to have some idea of the French Revolution before we go. And for me that means watch “Les Misérables” starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman (yes, I never saw it yet!). We never finish a movie in one go at home- maybe we are too impatient, or maybe just don’t have enough time in one sitting. But that means a movie takes a couple of days for us to finish. Perfect!
  • We have ravioli and pizza dough in our freezer. So making some homemade pizza or pasta is going to be a fun and yummy activity to do!
  • Shoveling workout should be great exercise for the muscles…its free, its outdoors, it gets a job done! And we get to chit chat with the neighbours who are all hibernating all winter otherwise 🙂
  • I got my government cheque yoga class pass. I would be trying an early morning Mysore class at Breathe yoga on Monday morning. I have heard of Mysore for years now, and my neighbourhood yoga studio actually specializes in it. So Monday is my chance to try it out. Since waking up early for me is not!
  • I have a new Shakespeare play to start- Henry IV Part 2! I read Part 1 of the play in January, and came across the very remarkable character of Sir John Falstaff. You can read about my discovery here. I am excited to get reacquainted with him yet again, although I know he doesn’t fare well in this play. But reading Shakespeare is the reading highlight of my month. And a long weekend is a great time to dig back in 🙂
  • I am curious about the TV show version of the book “One Hundred Years of Solitude” showing on Netflix. I read this book by Gabriel García Márquez more than a decade ago. I plan to give that a try and see if I want to watch the rest. I will report back in this blog to say what I think.
  • Drawing is always a great option for me. I have enough paper and drawing supplies and inspirational kitchen stuff to draw. Let me just declare in this space that this weekend will see me make three big drawings…that is, not quick 5 minute ones. But something I actually spend quality time doing. I am excited for this challenge!
  • Napping is a favourite frugal activity we adults partake in once in a while around here. That may also happen!
  • And finally, my family and I love playing board games and card games. So we may spend some quality time together doing that…Catan, Wingspan, Sushi Go, Uno, Camel Up, Playing Cards, Monoply…enough to choose from!

So yeah, that is going to be my frugal long weekend as planned. I am looking forward to it- both the low key fun activities, as well as, being frugal and saving some money!

PS: I will be taking Family Day (Monday) off from posting a blog. See you back on Tuesday!
