Frugal Friday: At Home Edition

Frugal Friday is back again. Here is my list of frugal ways from this week…

Mending…

My mended home shoes :-)

My home shoes that I inherited from my son once he outgrew them…well, they needed some mending, and that is what they got. I have a mending kit for clothes that I made because I love mending, and I love hand sewing (even though I haven’t done any in a while- both for time constraints, and lack of things to mend). So I was happy to have an opportunity to pull out my kit and fix my show…yay!

Also, now these shoes are really mine 🙂

Yoga at Home

I decided to do my long yoga at home

I was dilly dallying between going to an in-person yoga class, and using my good old “Alo Moves” app that I pay for yearly to do a longer session this week. Since it’s a deload week at the gym, I am doing lighter stuff for weight training, but also interspersing my week with more variety of exercises. And I figured, one long yoga session this week would be amazing, especially in-person. The last time I went to a class was in 2020! But in the interest of time- lots to do in the studio this month!- and saving some money, I went with a longer (and completely new to me) yoga class on Alo Moves. I sweated, and saved some time, and it was great. I will go to an in-person yoga session soon- maybe as a treat when I’m done with my latest painting series in December. For now, home yoga works just fine.

I used up some food scraps…

I used up cauliflower stalks with my lentils

I had some cauliflower stalks left over from making a mixed veg dish with potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, onion and spinach earlier this week. It seemed like a waste to throw away all that fresh looking stuff. So I had saved them without a plan. And last night, when I make my mung bean lentils, I just chopped them up and put the stalks in. I find my lentils a great vehicle for putting leftover vegetables in. No need to let things linger and die in the fridge, when I can get their benefits along with the lentils itself. The stalks were great- just a hint of crunch in the mushy lentils, and no flavor impact whatsoever. The broccoli stalks had gone straight into my mixed veg dish, so I didn’t have those leftover to use up, or they too would have made their way into the lentils 🙂

A Pot of Tea

Making a pot of tea instead of a cup works better

I have started making myself a whole pot of tea to linger over all afternoon, rather than make cups of them at different times as I feel like it. This saves me both time- waiting for the water to boil, putting the water to boil, taking out tea leaves multiple times etc.- and it definitely saves me using gas to heat up the water a number of times. And you know what, it is actually more comforting to know that I have all this tea waiting for me to make my afternoon work feel just a tad bit nicer, without having to work for every cup. I love it, and it saves me time and money.

Reduced Grocery

My husband bought reduced milk, since they were less than a week away from their best before date. I used it to make yogurt, so it all get heated up. And fermented. So reduced milk is fine, and 2 for the price of 1 🙂

And that is my list of frugal ways this week…
