Stories, ideas and musings to make sense of this thing called life..

Books and Exercise

It’s the middle of April already! A month since we returned from Paris…time is surely flying in this busy season of my life. With my son’s high school and his other commitments that keep us busy with drop offs and pick ups, and appointments of all sorts, and our own general busyness, maintaining lives and homes…yes, time sure does seem to pass quickly! The big event of this week is that my son, A, is getting his braces off! Two years later, suddenly he’ll be free of them…it seriously seems surreal. But of course, we are happy it all went well, mostly pain free and finally, its done!

I am happy my reading mojo is back. I devoured half a novel just on Saturday because I could not put it down. And now I am onto my April read of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. With my bookclub book, and Shakespeare play for the month done, I will have the rest of the month to read whatever I want! That seems like a great luxury of life- to be able to just pick up a book and go.

In audiobooks, I am listening to the famous 2024 New York Times Bestseller The Wedding People. It’s an entertaining book that’s easy to go down. But it hasn’t hit me yet in the way people have been raving about it. Maybe it’s a book that leaves one feeling good at the end? I don’t know. I guess I will find out!

In terms of workouts, I am in the bulking season of my training. I have upped my calories by 300 from maintenance in the hopes that it will give me a little more leverage in terms of building muscle for the next two months. I realize that 3 months that this bulk is planned for is not nearly enough time to build a good amount of muscle. But this is the time I have now, before I cut for summer. And then I plan to bulk for a longer haul starting in September. With more calories, I have to say I can feel a certain solidness in my workout that was missing earlier. Weights are progressing up easier. And with me doing only 3 lifting sessions a week, I feel well rested when I show up for some heavy lifts. So I think the rest and extra calories are doing me good. I am very happy with how things are going in the gym 🙂

With my yoga journey, I am on a 100 Day Project of learning the Ashtanga sequence and practicing it everyday, with one day break for restorative yoga each week. I love love love doing my own practice every morning during the week- the quiet of the house, the intentional breathing, the focus on doing the postures well…oh it’s very meditative, and I can’t see myself stopping after the 100 days are up! I just have 30 days left. Which means the project will be done in a month…probably my easiest project to date- yoga is easy for me to show up for I realized from doing it all these days without any friction…hopefully I don’t jinx it?! But, for sure, the yoga journey will continue, and it’s a practice for life.

And that is a mini update of the things on my mind these days.
