Stories, ideas and musings to make sense of this thing called life..

Summery Frugality

Frugal Friday has me thinking again of ways I have been frugal this week.

And as I am thinking about it, I can’t think of many ways that I did spend money, which means I must have been generally frugal, right?

Yoga Pass

My morning yoga sessions are covered for unlimited number of classes for 3 months, and it zaps me out of enough energy that I am not looking for life to be any more exciting. And that means less expenses! So my first frugal win is my yoga pass that is occupying me both physically and mentally. Also, I am going to enough number of classes that each class will cost not much at all by the time my pass expires. And all for a good opening of the body, and getting deep into a meditative ritualistic practice.

Library Books

I am reading Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley right now, borrowed from the library.
My latest book- light and easy so far

This is a constant frugal win for me because, well, I read a lot. And a library visit is on my errands list weekly. Because I have books to pick up and return. That, along with audiobooks on Libby, also through the Public Library system means I have a very frugal enlightening hobby. Right now I am reading The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley, and so far its light and bubbly and super entertaining!

Thrift Store Shopping

I bought tank tops for working out at the thrift store
My thrift store finds

Last Sunday we went thrift store shopping for me and my son. My son got some summery stuff for himself, as he’s growing like a weed, and every season we need bigger things for him to wear. So what better way to go about buying all the clothes that barely last a season than at the thrift store!

Also, it has been HOT, and I can’t wear t-shirts to work out when it’s that hot because I sweat a lot. So the big armpit sweat stains are not cool, not to mention sleeves make me feel VERY hot. So I needed some tank tops, especially for yoga. Because the yoga studio just has 2 space fans and no air conditioning, I needed clothes with less fabric. Since my gym is air conditioned, I didn’t need to strategically get tank tops before. And the best part is that I got 4 of them for under $15! That can’t be beat, and they are perfectly nice and fit my requirement. Plus they are for getting sweaty and dirty, so they don’t need to be fancy looking or anything…

Using up coins

I used up my coins at the Farmers’ Market last week
I love using coins!

I realized I had a lot of coins (mostly loonies and toonies) in my coin purse. So when we went to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, all our beautiful fresh produce was paid for by my coins…it felt great to have all that change and to get rid of them. There is something very satisfying about using change- feels like a load is off, and it kinda feels like free money. So instead of getting more cash from the ATM, we used up our coins for a lot of good local produce.

Beers

We had beers at home on a HOT day rather than spend more money at the pub
Beer at home frugal win!

Sunday was HOT. That was the day we were running around town doing our errands. And at some point we were heated through and feeling lethargic from the heat. There was a nice pub near one of our stops, and it seemed like a great easy idea to just pop in for a cold beer to refresh…like a siren calling! But. We decided to get home, and then have the beers because we already had a few cans in the fridge that we had already paid for. Also, doing so in non-sweaty clothes on our couch with no where else to go was definitely a better idea! And watching Mad Men while sipping on our beers just made it a perfect treat after a hot and tiring day out!

Have I been extra frugal, or thoughtfully frugal all week? No, not really.

But making it a part of the mindset means lots of things in life become automatically frugal.

And life becomes richer for every one of these small frugal wins…intentional or not.
