Writing this on Sunday morning…This weekend has been a great one- relaxing, perfect weather, and lots of time at home means I caught up on a lot of tasks I would usually have to skip over. Some of my weekend highlights look like this:
A Dinner Date OUTSIDE

On Saturday night my son and I went out for dinner. My husband was away on Saturday, so I decided to not cook, and have a dinner date with my favourite teenager…and we went to a Turkish restaurant Lokum Eats in the neighbourhood. A good 15 minute walk away means we had a delightful walk to and from, and then sat outside to eat…I had forgotten how lovely this feels- when the weather is perfect, and the food is great, and the company is delightful…On the way back we stopped at our favourite ice cream shop Delight in the Junction and had a dessert to end our perfect evening together….Did I mention, the weather was PERFECT?!
Finished my book…Also OUTSIDE

All Saturday morning I sat outside in my backyard, and read and read and read. My bum was sore from reading, but my heart was happy…No the book wasn’t happy…in fact it had a very sad ending. It was Marie Antoinette’s fictional biography Abundance. And we all know it did not end well. But Sena Naslund’s writing had me gripped to the voice of MA to the very end. To be so entranced by the words of a person coming through the writer- it was a weird feeling. I had a hard time distinguishing the author from the character (who was once living and breathing) hard in my head…at some point they were one and the same and I wanted to keep listening to them. The only company I had besides MA were all the squirrels and birds going about their business and reminding me where I was. A great morning indeed!
Vaccine Updating
Measels seems to be looming over summer camps and schools these days. Both our summer camp authorities and Toronto Public Health want to know the kids’ measles vaccine status. So I spent good 20 minutes updating the Public Health website with my son’s vaccine documentation. That way if there is a case of measles at school or camp, he won’t have to miss. Knowing that he is protected going into school, and wilderness for his summer camp gives me peace. I have had measles growing up, and it was definitely not fun. But it’s only now I am realizing that it could be deadly. So being fully vaccinated makes total sense in my head.
Started New Book

So I have two mammoth books to finish this month. One was Abundance, the historical fiction about Marie Antoinette that I just mentioned. That one is done and dusted. My second big book of the month is The Bookseller of Florence by Ross King. This one is non-fiction, and denser. So I think these 400 pages will go slower. I have read and enjoyed Ross King’s books before so I know it will be great. But because it’s for book club this month, I want to read it in time and make sure I don’t snarf it in. So I got started on it right away on Saturday night. That way I will have enough time to read it and take it in. But I’m still thinking of Marie Antoinette…
Baking Steel experiment

My husband will be back home shortly. I am planning to make sourdough pizzas for dinner. But I just bought a baking steel for making pizzas in the oven, and have it all seasoned and ready…Since its our first time using it I am nervous and not expecting perfection…but we’ll see. Seeing how homemade pizzas have become a regular feature of our weekend meals, I decided to invest in some Canadian made steel for baking as it was recommended for best results. I am hoping for decent first results…
