Stories, ideas and musings to make sense of this thing called life..

Weekend Shenanigans

We Canadians have to be the most weather resilient people, no? With a blizzard on Thursday that resulted in snow coverage everywhere, to a balmy 20 degrees on Thursday and sunny, to all that rain and cold arctic air back on the weekend- well, we are ready for it all I suppose- in our clothing, in our bodies, and most importantly in our psychology!

April is a tricky month with the cold and warmth moving through in a push and pull for dominance in the weather pattern. Snow and heat and lots of rain are all in the cards. But the problem is that we (me!) have already had a long winter behind us. And so, we as a species (again, me!) are completely done with it, and are ready to move on to more comfortable outside temperatures. But it sure does take its time to fully arrive. And it plays on our (my) nerves for sure!

With my weather venting out of the way, I am ready to talk about my weekend. A few adventures happened.

We found a beautiful bulk shop not far from home

Found The Source Bulk Food in Roncesvalles and loved it!
The Source Bulk Food in Roncesvalles…I am loving!

To have organic oils, honey, maple syrup etc. in bulk, along with nuts, seeds, snacks, flours, lentils etc…what a treasure The Source Bulk Foods is! They are all fresh, mostly organic and a whole lot Canadian. I felt like I was in grocery heaven! Obviously no fresh produce or dairy etc. But for other pantry items this was a beautiful place to find and shop at. I am definitely going to be making a run once a month now!

More Mad Men binging

Mad Men binging continues

Yes, we can’t get enough of this super well made show! We just finished off the second season. The details, the characterization, the story lines everything is done so cleverly- no details are too small to consider. And the story keeps us on the hook the whole way through. I had always heard about the greatness of this show, and am now finding it out for myself. So glad I decided to watch.

A cute French breakfast date with my love

At Bonjour Brioche for a lovely breakfast date
Loving this east end Toronto gem

My husband and I dropped off our son at his leadership program on Saturday morning and headed for a breakfast date at Bonjour Brioche…a very cute French boulangerie/patisserie/cafe in the East End. The staff are lovely, the food is amazing, and the company is always delightful 🙂 And there is something about the old charm warmth of this place that is hard to resist. No wonder it’s always full!

Experimenting with Sourdough Pizza

I posted about how I found myself some authentic pizza flour all the way from Italy a couple of weeks ago. Well, when one has a sourdough starter, and some pizza flour, what one does is put them together and make pizzas, and hope they turn out well, no? Well, they did! And it wasn’t even that much more work. Ok, maybe it was work, but the kind I love- kneading, watching the dough rise, feeling the hope. And so much more satisfying too. I don’t know what it is about sourdough, but it sure gives us all hope. That life is ok. No wonder the sourdough obsession travels far and wide. Since the recipe I used makes 4 pizzas, and I only wanted 2, I made the rest 2 into one focaccia bread instead. And that turned out pretty well too. So happy with my sourdough experiments so far.

Us in chocolate heaven

Our hot chocolate drinks at ChocoSol Traders
I love the three different shades of our hot chocolates, and the chocolate samples to go with them!

After months and months, we had finally run out of our chocolate stash, and so had to go back for some more to our favourite place for a big refill- Chocosol. Not only did we get a lot of chocolates to last us for a lot of months, we also treated ourselves to a drink each- some beautiful hot chocolate…and yes, it was heavenly as always 🙂 I usually am not a fan of hot chocolate in cafes because its too sweet for my taste. But at Chocosol its perfect. Lightly sweet, and the star is chocolate all the way…And its all fair trade as well.

That was a good weekend. Relaxing. Some cleaning got done. Some reading got done. And well, quality time spent with family was the best part about it.
